Intensive Literacy

Word By Mouth Speech Pathology specialise in intensive literacy intervention programs, which operate during the school holiday periods.

The purpose of the program is to support students with, Specific Learning Difficulties through an intensive approach utilising an explicit teaching model. The program was originally developed by Melinda Schambre, Speech Pathologist with extensive experience in literacy intervention. This is an individualised, highly structured program, which aims to develop literacy skills through explicit teaching and a strong phonological approach.

The goals for each student are based on previous assessment results and current needs. The underlying skills essential for literacy success are addressed and reinforced including sound letter knowledge, phonological awareness and auditory discrimination. Single word reading, single word spelling, text reading and text writing are also addressed using a variety of motivational resources.

The program consists of two forty-five minute sessions per day for five days. This totals 7.5 hours of intervention over the course of the week. It is expected that students will attend all sessions with a parent/guardian in order to benefit from the program.
